What I have become today can be attributed to my journey as a wife and mother. I say this because every plan I make and every goal I set is with my family in mind. They have also been my source of support, encouragement, and the engine that has propelled me to continue my personal, spiritual and academic growth. I have an amazing husband, Victor, of 22 years and two wonderful college kids, Jose, 21, and Valentina, 18.
Presently, I hold a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and am an Education Counselor/Recruiter at Vanguard University of Southern California, School for Professional Studies. The focus of my position is to assist adult learners (predominately moms) in their return to college. In addition, I serve as a guide and mentor to Latina students on campus. I am creating and have participated in workshops in both English and Spanish to assist first generation parents navigate through their new experiences and new expectations of college life with their children and, also, creating workshops to assist moms find a balance between family, work and college life. The workshops are offered to the community, schools, small groups and organizations.
My past work experience includes being a professional child actor/singer, medical assistant, and business owner. I have cultivated many memories and life- changing experiences throughout my life but one of the most empowering has been the fact that I am the product of immigrant parents who struggled to find success in their own lives but, somehow, in a peculiar way, were able to help me find mine.
I have worn many hats in my life but the one I am currently wearing is my favorite thus far.
What inspired you to get to where you are now?
I have an enormous desire to make a difference in the lives of young adults, Latinas and women. Education has never come easy to me; however, my desire to make a difference has given me the will to continue. I know God has put me in this world for a reason.
What is your favorite book and why?
Believe it or not, I don’t have a favorite book, movie, song or band. With that said, I don’t enjoy reading novels. For inspiration, I enjoy non-fiction, especially biographies and autobiographies. I also like the Bible because it is the ultimate read. Its interpretations take on different forms depending on the reader, religious background, spirituality, faith and need. It is complicated but yet easy to understand. You can read it daily and receive a different message to fit your present life. It is truly a fascinating and life changing book.
My second favorite book is one I recently completed reading titled, “My Beloved World” by Sonia Sotomayor. It offers an inspirational portrait of an underprivileged but brilliant young Latina woman who makes her way into the American elite and does her best to reform it from the inside.
What is your favorite way to stay balanced?
Watching my family have fun makes me feel a sense of accomplishment and, therefore, gives me balance. Quality time with my better half is also a wonderful way to bring balance and meaning to my life.
What is your favorite vacation destination?
I enjoyed El Salvador for its rich culture and landscape.
